SPECIALISED SPORTS

OUR SERVICES

THE IMPORTANCE OF PERSONALISED PROGRAMMES

Recognising that each sport presents distinct physical demands and consequently a unique spectrum of potential injuries, the team at ATHLETIC INC understands the importance of a highly specialised approach across all facets of athletic development.

From meticulously tailored strength and conditioning programmes designed for the specific biomechanics of each discipline, to nuanced nutritional and dietetic strategies addressing the precise fuelling and recovery requirements, and finally, to physiotherapy and rehabilitation protocols attuned to the common injuries and movement patterns inherent in each pursuit, our comprehensive services are individualised. This ensures that every athlete receives a bespoke programme, optimising their performance, mitigating injury risk, and supporting their journey towards achieving their peak potential.

Aquatic Sports

Competitive Swimming, Synchronised Swimming, Diving, and Related Water Sports

  • Musculoskeletal overuse, particularly affecting the shoulders and back due to the repetitive and often forceful movements in the water.

  • To assist these dedicated competitors, physiotherapy commonly employs a range of techniques. Manual therapy, including soft tissue mobilisation and joint articulation, helps to address pain and stiffness. Therapeutic exercise programmes, tailored to strengthen specific muscle groups supporting the affected joints and improve overall stability and biomechanics, are crucial. Furthermore, biomechanical analysis of the athlete's technique in the water, coupled with expert guidance on training load management and injury prevention strategies, forms an integral part of their comprehensive care at ATHLETIC INC., ensuring they can continue to excel in their demanding aquatic pursuits.

Endurance Sports

Running, Cycling, Long-Distance Swimming

  • Overuse injuries are prevalent due to repetitive motions. These include stress fractures (particularly in the lower limbs for runners), tendinopathies (Achilles, patellar), iliotibial band syndrome (runners), and muscle strains. Cyclists may experience knee pain, back pain, and nerve compression issues. Swimmers commonly suffer from "swimmer's shoulder" (rotator cuff issues, impingement), knee pain (breaststrokers), and back pain.

  • Treatment often involves manual therapy (soft tissue mobilisation, joint mobilisation), therapeutic exercise (strengthening weak muscles, improving flexibility and stability), electrotherapy (ultrasound, TENS), biomechanical assessment and correction, and advice on training load management and injury prevention strategies.

High-Impact &
Contact Sports

Football, Rugby, Basketball, Soccer, Hockey

  • These sports often involve collisions, falls, and sudden directional changes, leading to acute and traumatic injuries. Common issues include sprains (ankle, knee), strains (hamstring, groin), ligamentous tears (anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial collateral ligament (MCL)), dislocations (shoulder, patella), fractures, and contusions (bruises). Head injuries and concussions are also significant concerns.

  • Acute management includes the RICE protocol (rest, ice, compression, elevation). Subsequent rehabilitation focuses on restoring range of motion, strength, proprioception, and functional movements through tailored exercise programmes. Manual therapy may address joint stiffness and soft tissue restrictions. Neurological rehabilitation is crucial for concussion management.

Jumping &
Agility Sports

Basketball, Volleyball, Gymnastics, Latin Dance, Ballroom Dance, Pickleball, Padel

  • These sports involve explosive movements, jumping, landing, and rapid changes in direction, placing stress on joints and muscles. Common injuries include ankle sprains, knee injuries (patellar tendinopathy, ligamentous sprains), stress fractures (lower limbs), and overuse injuries related to repetitive jumping and landing. Dancers may also experience foot, ankle, hip, and back issues. Racquet sport athletes can suffer from ankle sprains, calf strains, and knee pain. Gymnasts may also experience wrist and back injuries.

  • Treatment involves manual therapy, therapeutic exercise focusing on strength, power, agility, and balance, proprioceptive training, taping and bracing for support, and advice on landing mechanics and injury prevention.

Weightlifting & Strength Sports

Weightlifting, Powerlifting, Strongman / Strongwoman, Body Building and more

  • These sports involve lifting heavy loads, which can lead to muscle strains (back, shoulders, hamstrings), tendinopathies (elbows, knees), and sometimes more acute injuries if proper form is not maintained or loads are excessive.

  • Treatment includes manual therapy to address muscle tightness and joint restrictions, therapeutic exercise focusing on strength, stability, and proper lifting mechanics, pain management strategies, and education on safe lifting techniques and training progression.

Overhead Sports

Tennis, Baseball, Volleyball, Swimming, Golf, Racquet Sports and more

  • Repetitive overhead motions can strain the shoulder and elbow joints. Common injuries include rotator cuff tendinopathy and tears, shoulder impingement, and elbow tendinopathy (lateral and medial epicondylalgia). Golfers may experience back pain, elbow pain, and wrist injuries due to the repetitive and forceful swing. Swimmers, as mentioned earlier, are also prone to shoulder issues.

  • Management focuses on restoring pain-free range of motion, strengthening the rotator cuff and scapular stabilisers (for shoulder injuries), addressing muscle imbalances, manual therapy for joint and soft tissue restrictions, and biomechanical analysis and correction of movement patterns (e.g., throwing technique, golf swing).
